Phonics and Reading Programmes

Unlike speaking, the art of reading and writing doesn’t come naturally. Children need to be taught literacy skills. They need to learn not only the technical skills but also how to use these tools to better their thinking and reasoning.

Many preschools and enrichment centres focus solely on phonics, the teaching of letter-sound relationships. Phonics is a vital initial step in teaching children to read but it is far from the whole picture. It’s great to be able to figure out the sounds of words, but by itself, it makes reading unbearably slow and tedious. For children to understand what they read, they must be able to read words fluently and accurately. Fluent and accurate word reading frees children to focus their attention on the meaning of what they read. Understanding the meaning of text (Reading comprehension) is the ultimate goal of reading.

5 key aspects to get children on the road to reading success:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Magic English takes an integrated approach and covers all 5 key areas in our Phonics and Reading Programmes, which consist of 3 levels:

Basic phonemic awareness and phonics are introduced together with a vast vocabulary.

Advanced phonemic awareness and phonics which leads to students reading simple cvc (consonant vowel consonant) words and sentences at the end of the programme.

Systematically builds on students’ phonics ability from reading simple words to complex words. Reading Wand covers the last 3 areas mentioned above: fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Our reading specialists are experienced and highly trained to identify the learning needs of young children, and recognise and overcome the barriers that impede learning.
